Doctor Who Tardis Gingerbread House

Published: Jun 19, 2014 · Modified: Jun 12, 2023 by Anna Nguyen

Gingerbread houses are lame. A gingerTARDIS house that lights up, on the other hand... Created Doctor Who's time machine, the TARDIS, out of gingerbread and royal icing! I've been seeing creations of the Tardis all over the Internet, and I thought I would finally take up the challenge.tardis

I looked up many scaled-down templates of the Tardis, but ended up taking the actual dimensions of the Tardis and putting the measurements into proportion with the size I was working with. I am furiously looking for the blueprints of my templates to show you guys, so once I find them, I'll definitely be showing you guys! (UPDATE: I finally found them so if you'd like to see them, please comment below!)

After making two batches of the amazing gingerbread dough mixture (my sweets-hating mother was obsesssssed with the bread), I rolled it out and traced out the template. I made a few extras of each just in case! Next, I made a blue royal icing mixture of medium consistency so it would easily spread across my templates as I frosted them. Make sure to leave some extra (for the assembly process). While letting the bread dry rock solid, I began to make fondant windows for my four walls. I made 8 white square windows and as they hardened, I drew lines to create the window effect. I also made 24 blue fondant squares to make the panel effect for the walls. Assembly was a bit frustrating since the shapes had to fit perfectly, as well as stand up to support each other. With the leftover royal icing acting as my glue, I was able to successfully frost the inside corners of the Tardis. Next, I added the mini LED light I bought at the craft store and poked a small hole in my square template to snugly fit the light through the cookie. With more attaching and food gluing, I finally did it!

Not everything is edible. For example, the lights are obviously not, as well as the signs. I got super lazy towards the end of this project, so instead of writing it out on fondant, I decided to print them out (it made life so much easier). The plus side about my creation is that it also lights up with LED lights around the Tardis! Remember, "It's bigger on the inside." Unfortunately, my creation isn't bigger on the inside, but it's pretty darn cute on the outside! Made this for a special doctor I know and even though he probably couldn't eat it, hope it brightened his day.

Could you please share the template? My friend hosts a yearly gingerbread competition, and I just know that this will be the most interesting submission!

Hi, Sarah! Because it was so long ago when I made this, I can't seem to find my templates! I am still on the search! If I can't find them, I may need to make a new set of templates. I really apologize! I will let you know when I get to find them or when I post a new one.
